Honoring Jerome Weisman at the Highlights Foundation
Art that Inspired Kids Worldwide
Jerry Weisman, 1926-1996, was one of the most prolific children’s illustrators of the 20th century. During a 43-year career with Highlights for Children, his artwork appeared in 500+ issues of the magazine, reaching more than one million kids each month.
“He was tireless in trying new techniques. I marvel at how wonderfully fresh his work stayed over four decades. Surely that’s a tribute to his tremendous talent as an artist and illustrator.”—Kent Brown, former editor of Highlights for Children and founder of the Highlights Foundation
Jerome Weisman’s Legacy at the Highlights Foundation
As a graduate of Carnegie Tech, Jery was exceptionally learned in multiple art disciplines, yet drawing for children was his first love. Additionally, Jerry was an inveterate, worldwide traveler, always returning home with presents for family and friends, but particularly his beloved nieces and nephews.
Jerry was a gifted and prolific illustrator with a uniquely engaging personality that provided indelible memories to his coworkers, family and friends.
They have established the Jerome Weisman Art Studio, library display, and Jerome Weisman Scholarship Fund to ensure Jerry’s legacy for years to come—supporting future generations of illustrators who inspire children through art and story, just like Jerry did.
The Jerome Weisman Art Studio
Jerry spent many an evening visiting in the living room of the house with Highlights founders Garry and Caroline Myers, and would have looked out the living room window to what was the “chicken coop.” Today, it honors his memory and serves as a working space for other children’s illustrators, as they produce art that will inspire kids (just like he did). The Jerome Weisman Scholarship
The family of the late Jerome Weisman has established a scholarship in his honor. For 43 years, Jerry Weisman provided thousands of unfailingly beautiful and apt illustrations for Highlights for Children. The scholarship provides support for an illustrator to attend a Highlights Foundation course of their choice, either online or in-person. Learn more about the scholarship.
The Jerome Weisman Library Display
