Jane Yolen & Heidi EY Stemple Scholarship
Authors Jane Yolen and her daughter Heidi EY Stemple have established a scholarship to support in-person or online tuition to workshops and personal retreats at the Highlights Foundation. (Visitors coming to campus can even ask to stay in the Jane Yolen Cabin!)
Heidi says: “We believe in paying it forward–which is why we started the Heidi EY Stemple & Jane Yolen scholarship (we are still squabbling about the order of our names) at the Highlights Foundation. Anyone can apply and it helps pay for workshops to learn about the craft or business of children’s books.”
Jane says: “From the beginning of my long career in publishing–first as an editor, then as a writer–I have believed in paying it forward. How else could I honor those who taught me all I know about writing–from my early school days to my high school and college teachers who encouraged my poetry and stories, to the editors who first published me. Most of them are long gone. I am turning 82. But by paying it forward–whether by speaking, teaching, or starting scholarships and fellowships for young writers who might not otherwise have been as lucky as I, I can keep the line of writers safe. So they can find time and place to write their books, meet the editors, explore new ways of telling their stories, their histories; allowing them to bring their book to our libraries, our tables, our bedsides, our hearts.”
